It is about the integration of digital technology in the shipbuilding sector (autonomous ships) and ship recycling.
In particular, on these two issues, it states the following:
Digitalization-Autonomous ships
“Autonomous ships are at the more advanced end of the smart ship spectrum and are defined by the IMO as ‘a ship which, to varying degrees, can operate independently of human interaction.’
Global autonomous shipping market size estimates range from $4-10 billion by 2022-2023, with projected CAGRs of around 10% and values of $8-12 billion by the end of the decade.
Europe is seen as an important player in this market, investing in sustainable maritime activities and R&D.
In the EU, R&D funding is driving innovation and viability in the autonomous ship market, with several major EU projects, some of which are funded under Horizon 2020, either completed or currently under way. implementation.
Projects have progressed from concept/feasibility studies (e.g. €2.9m MUNIN project completed in 2016) to on-water demonstration project (e.g. Autoship, Eurogard, Seamless).”
Ship recycling
“The focus on sustainability and circularity highlights the importance of ship recycling.
This activity peaked in 2017 in the EU, with 40 ships being recycled, totaling 21,000 light displacement tonnes (LDT). However, this amount was reduced to 4,500 LDT in 2019.
A total of 211 ships were recycled at EU facilities between 2014 and 2019, mainly in Denmark and Belgium, but this represents less than 1% of the EU-controlled fleet.
Outside the EU, many large ships are still broken up in ship recycling facilities that operate under poor environmental and safety standards.”
