Immigration at G7 as conflicts rise in Europe

The G7 interior ministers’ summit in Mirabella Eclano, Italy, wrapped up with immigration as the key topic. This aligns with discussions at the G7 summit in June. European governments, shifting to more conservative positions, now face increased pressure to revise their immigration policies.

In September, the Netherlands requested an exemption from EU immigration rules. This reflects the rising strain on European nations. France’s junior minister for Europe, Benjamin Haddad, is expected to push Brussels for tougher regulations.

Stefan de Vries, a European affairs correspondent for Euronews and Les Echos, explained the current trend. “What we are seeing is the success of populist rhetoric,” de Vries said in an interview with Monocle Radio’s The Briefing.

Conflicts in the Middle East continue to drive large numbers of asylum seekers to Europe. This adds pressure on EU nations to respond. Achieving consensus among the G7 ministers, however, remains difficult. “It’s not a topic that these ministers will agree upon. Of course, Japan, Canada, and the U.S. also have different views,” de Vries added.

Despite disagreements, the discussions will influence immigration policies in the near future. European leaders are expected to take new steps to address the growing migrant crisis.
