“Europe is facing a new wave of potentially dangerous Palestinian immigrants,” states an article by Geoffroy Antoine, published in Le Journal Du Dimanche and republished by Breizh-Info. The columnist claims to have access to confidential documents from France’s Office for Combating Illegal Immigration (OLTIM). These documents reveal the latest trends in migration to Europe.
Increase in illegal migration to Europe
According to OLTIM, migration pressure is high, especially with the arrival of Palestinian refugees. These refugees are entering Europe through various routes, including the Balkans, Italy, and Spain.
The latest figures show a sharp increase in irregular entries into the European Union. In August 2024, traffickers transported 22,557 illegal immigrants, compared to fewer than 20,000 in July.
Illegal immigration in the central Mediterranean rose by 9%, while the eastern Mediterranean saw a 36% increase in the first eight months of the year.
Greek islands: A primary destination
Greek islands are the main destination for Palestinian refugees, as highlighted by the OLTIM report. Recently, several individuals with Palestinian Authority passports arrived at the Leros hotspot. Their aggressive behavior and refusal to answer questions from Greek authorities have raised security concerns.
These individuals have been labeled as “potentially dangerous.” They are also pressuring authorities for immediate transfer to mainland Europe.
In August, the situation in the Aegean Sea worsened. The Greek Coast Guard faced increasing aggression from migrant smugglers.
Rising migration flows to Greece and Cyprus
Greece remains one of the main gateways to Europe, with migration flows up by 56% compared to 2023. Migrants mainly arrive by sea, despite stronger deterrent measures.
Cyprus, on the other hand, has managed to curb arrivals by sea since April. The country also reduced land crossings by 61% through tightened controls.
Future concerns for the E.U.
Developments in the Middle East suggest that the European Union will soon face a new wave of illegal immigration. The migrant profile is expected to be controversial, raising further security and policy challenges for European countries.
